Art Exhibits at Emerald Isle Parks & Recreation

Kathleen Johnston will be displaying her photography at Emerald Isle Parks & Recreation during July and August.

"To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy." ~Henri Cartier-Bresson (French Photographer, 1908-2004)

Kathleen moved to Emerald Isle, North Carolina from her home state of Massachusetts in January, 2000 after serving twenty-two years on the Boston Police Department. She has a degree in Elementary Education from Boston State College.

After retiring from law enforcement, she wanted to pursue her love of photography. She has taken several photography workshops throughout the United States and has attended photography classes at Coastal Carolina Community College and Carteret Community College. She continues to attend classes and workshops to improve her photographic skills.

Kathleen says, “I enjoy photographing the many places I have traveled as well as the beautiful areas here in eastern North Carolina. My primary work consists of color nature, landscape & wildlife photography, but recently I have begun to explore black & white photography and varied techniques using water and smoke. My work has appeared in local publications such as the Tideland News and the Island Review and has been exhibited at the Emerald Isle Town Hall, the Western Carteret Public Library, and the Museum of Life and Science in Raleigh. For the past several years, my photographs have been selected by the North Carolina Community College President for yearlong exhibits at the Caswell Building in Raleigh. This year, Commissioner Jim Long selected one of my photographs to hang at the NC Department of Insurance Building in Raleigh. I also have photographs displayed at several Carteret County businesses as part of the "Adopt an Artist " program sponsored by the Arts Council of Carteret County.”

Birder’s World Magazine selected her photo of a red-headed woodpecker as their photo of the week in March, 2007. Also in 2007, Smithsonian Magazine selected one of her photographs as a top ten finalist in the altered images category of their annual photo contest; out of a field of 8,500 entries.

She recently won First Place in the black & white category in the Fall, 2007 competition of the Coastal Camera Club and an "Excellence in Photography Award" at the 2008 Arts from the Heart show sponsored by the Carteret County Arts Coalition.

She is the Vice President of the Emerald Eye Camera Club in Emerald Isle and a member of the Carolina Nature Photographers Association, the Coastal Camera Club of New Bern and the Arts Council of Carteret County.

She can be reached by email at Seawrenity@aol.com"  telephone at 252-354-7913.

Bill Johnston will be displaying his photography at Emerald Isle Parks & Recreation during July and August.

Bill Johnston came to Emerald Isle from Boston in January, 2000 after retiring from the Boston Police Department where he served for 31 years.

Bill took up photography as a hobby about three years ago after accompanying his wife on several photo trips. Since then, he has attended courses sponsored by Carteret Community College and has participated in several photography workshops and tours. He enjoys traveling and photography both in the States and abroad but, mostly enjoys photographing the beauty and nature close to home in Eastern North Carolina.

Bill says, “Photography allows me to slow down and really view the world from a close perspective. I enjoy capturing the beauty and serenity of the coast and farmlands and I also enjoy finding patterns in nature and seeking out abstract designs from concrete subjects.”

In addition to photography, Bill enjoys decoy carving and taking ongoing classes to improve his skills. He has exhibited his photography at the Western Carteret Library and the Emerald Isle Town Hall, and has exhibited and sold carvings at the annual Harker’s Island Decoy Festival.

Bill is a member of the Emerald Eye Camera Club, the Coastal Camera Club, and the Carolina Nature Photographer’s Association.
