The NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and their contractor, Penhall Company, are nearing completion of a major bridge construction project on the NC 58 bridge.  The project involves the replacement of bridge joints and resurfacing of the bridge decking.  Work began in December 2012, and is expected to be complete by May 23.  The project is intended to extend the life of the bridge for another 30-40 years or more.

All remaining work is being completed during weeknight hours (Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 pm to 7 am), and one lane is closed during those hours.  No daytime or weekend lane closures are planned, however, there may be brief periods when one lane is closed during daytime hours.

Please drive safely and slowly in construction zone, and also obey all flagmen and traffic signals!

The public should note that bicyclists, runners, and other pedestrians are not permitted on the bridge during times that one lane is closed.  Wide-load vehicles, including mobile home deliveries and house movers, are also not permitted on the bridge during times that one lane is closed.

Please note that this schedule has the potential to change due to unforeseen circumstances.  Additional and updated lane closure information will be posted at www.emeraldisle-nc.org as construction progresses.

The lane closures are an inconvenience for everyone in Emerald Isle and surrounding areas, and your patience is greatly appreciated by NCDOT.  The project is being managed by NCDOT's New Bern office, and they can be reached at 252-514-4759.
